For the first time in India, a UPI app is offering biometric payments. This app will allow you to make payments without requiring a PIN, but instead using fingerprint or face identification.
At the Global Fintech Festival 2025, Navi UPI launched two new features. It is India’s first app to offer biometric payments on a large scale. Payments can be approved using fingerprint and face ID. Furthermore, the onboarding process has been simplified, making digital payments easier and safer. Currently, to make a payment using a UPI app, you first unlock it, scan it, enter the amount, and then enter the UPI PIN. But very soon, you will be able to make payments using just your fingerprint or face identification using the Navi UPI app.
No need to enter UPI PIN
Biometric authentication eliminates the need for users to enter their UPI PIN. They will be able to approve transactions using their phone’s fingerprint or Face ID. This feature is coming to both Android and iOS. Previously, it existed as a small pilot project on UPI platforms, but NAVI has integrated it into the entire app. It operates on the phone’s secure system, so your data doesn’t leak out. Entering an incorrect PIN typically results in failed transactions; this risk will be reduced here.
Onboarding process made easy
The new onboarding makes it much easier to create a Navi UPI ID and add a bank account. Previously, it took several steps; now, the ID can be set up in just a few minutes. Auto-verification allows users to onboard smoothly without getting frustrated during registration. After downloading the Navi app, they can begin transacting immediately. The company says this will encourage more people to adopt digital payments. Both features will soon be available to all users.
India UPI is the king of digital payments
India is known as the king of UPI digital payments because of the large number of people using it here. Statistics show that more than 14 billion transactions occur each month. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) oversees this system. New RBI regulations have introduced options like biometrics. Starting October 8th, Aadhaar-based biometric payments will also be rolled out nationwide.
